How does reimbursement actually work?
You pay the vet, then claim. The insurer subtracts your annual deductible once per year, then pays back your reimbursement percentage of the remaining eligible cost, up to your annual limit. The calculator above does this maths for you.
Which pet insurers cover the exam fee?
Embrace, Fetch, Pumpkin, Spot, Pets Best and Nationwide reimburse the vet exam or consultation fee. Trupanion and Healthy Paws do not. Since you pay an exam fee at almost every visit, this adds up.
Do any cover pre-existing conditions?
No standard plan covers conditions your pet already has. A few (like MetLife) may cover a curable past condition after a symptom-free period. Insure while your pet is young and healthy for the best coverage.
